Google indexing stuck? Run these 17 fixes first—coverage, crawl budget, canonicals, sitemaps, robots, internal links. Get pages indexed again.

You published the page. You did the usual stuff. Maybe you even shared it on socials.
And then. Nothing.
No impressions. No clicks. The page doesn’t show up for site:yourdomain.com/page-url. In Google Search Console it sits there like a rock. Crawled, or discovered, or just… ignored.
Indexing issues feel personal because you did the work. But most “not indexed” situations are boring, fixable, and kind of predictable once you know where to look.
So here are 17 fixes I’d run through before you spiral, rewrite the article, or start blaming an algorithm update.
First, a quick reality check
Indexing is not instant. Google can discover a URL today and decide to index it next week. Or not at all, if it thinks the page adds nothing new.
But. If you’re stuck in “Discovered currently not indexed”, “Crawled currently not indexed”, or “Duplicate, Google chose different canonical”, you want to get more intentional.
Ok. Let’s go.
1. Make sure the page isn’t set to noindex (it happens more than you think)
Check:
- The meta robots tag in the HTML (
noindex,nofollow) - The HTTP header (X-Robots-Tag can override everything)
- CMS plugins that set noindex on tags, archives, thin pages, staging pages, etc.
This is the fastest win on the list because it’s either wrong or it isn’t.
2. Check robots.txt, but also check what Google actually sees
Robots.txt blocks crawling, not indexing, but in practice it can still create indexing chaos because Google can’t fetch the page to confirm directives or content.
In Search Console, use URL Inspection and view Crawl allowed? and Page fetch details.
Also make sure you didn’t block:
/blog/or/category/- query parameters you actually use for canonical pages

3. Confirm it returns 200 OK consistently (not sometimes)
A page can return 200 in your browser but be flaky for bots.

- location based rules

Pick one canonical version and force everything else to it with 301s and consistent internal links.
6. Put the URL in your XML sitemap (and make sure the sitemap is clean)
Sitemaps don’t guarantee indexing, but they do make intent obvious.
Checklist:
- URL is in the sitemap
- sitemap is submitted in Search Console
- sitemap only includes indexable URLs (no redirects, no 404s, no canonicals pointing elsewhere)
- lastmod is accurate-ish (don’t spam it every day for no reason)

7. Add internal links like you mean it
If the page has zero internal links, it’s basically a rumor.
Do this:
- link to it from a relevant high authority page (homepage, category hub, top blog post)

- include it in navigation only if it truly belongs there (don’t bloat menus)

8. Don’t publish thin pages and then act surprised
If the page is 300 words of generic advice, Google may crawl it and decide it’s not worth indexing. That’s what “Crawled currently not indexed” often really means.
Quick ways to thicken a page without fluff:
- add unique examples from your niche
- include a short step by step section
- add original screenshots or mini case studies
- answer follow up questions you know users have
- add a FAQ that’s not copy pasted from competitors

9. Fix “soft 404” signals
A page can be a 200 OK and still look like a 404 to Google.

11. Make sure the content is accessible without weird rendering traps
Google can render JavaScript, but it’s still not magic.
Indexing can get delayed when:
- the main content loads after user interaction
- content is hidden behind tabs that never render server side
- the page requires cookies or consent prompts to show content
- the HTML is basically empty and everything is client side
If you can, render key content server side, or at least ensure the initial HTML includes the main text.

14. Update the page with meaningful changes (not just rewriting the intro)

Meaningful changes:
- add 2 to 4 new sections that answer missing intent
- add unique media (screenshots, charts, demo video)

- include citations to credible sources when relevant

15. Look for quality issues site wide (not just this one URL)

If the domain has:

- copied content
